Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative (SMBSC) recognizes the importance of investing in our communities. By creating and sustaining healthy communities, our shareholders, employees, and neighbors have more opportunities to grow, develop and flourish.
SMBSC allocates monetary and in-kind donations to worthwhile events that support and enhance our communities. SMBSC’s active involvement is focused on our 20-county growing area. Specifically, SMBSC invests in agricultural activities, education, community health and service organizations, and other special requests. Yearly highlights include the county fairs, Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation, Technology and Trades on the Prairies, Olivia Hospital and Clinic Foundation, Rice Health Foundation, local fire departments and ambulance teams, FFA, 4H, and many hometown celebrations/events.
SMBSC employees also donate to local causes that are a benefit to our rural communities. Money in their Employee Benefit Fund is raised by receiving a percentage of the monthly sales from the candy and pop machines that are located in the factory, warehouse and executive office. Highlights of SMBSC employee donations are Renville County Rebels Special Olympics, Renville County Santa’s Closet, local fire and ambulance departments, and Renville County Food Shelf to name a few.
SMBSC believes in investing in the future of our children. Yearly, SMBSC offers six scholarships to students who plan to pursue their education beyond high school graduation, which can be awarded to an immediate family member of our employees and shareholders.
The Sweet Beet Crew hits the pavement to promote SMBSC during local parades in the summer.
The mission of Food for Kidz is to package and distribute nutritious meals to hungry children and their families where crisis has struck and there is an immediate need. SMBSC is a delighted to supply Food for Kidz with our quality sugar year after year. It is a privilege to provide a necessary ingredient of food packets that help eradicate hunger and starvation in the world.
Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative is at Minnesota’s great get-together. Our sugar is used by L&B Cotton Candy to make their fluffy, pink cotton candy.
SMBSC is dedicated to make an impact in a fight that affects so many around us – cancer. Cancer attacks our moms, dads, sisters and brothers, the local farmer, doctor, grocery store clerk, teacher…our children. SMBSC sponsors events that are geared towards the fight for cancer-free communities. Since 1999, SMBSC has raised a total of $163,420 in donations to fund lifesaving research, treatment, and care for our neighbors, family members and friends.
